Fred and Bex

This is a rather scrumptious take on the flavours of mulled wine, but with extra fruitiness provided by a generous splash of Fred & Bex Raspberry Vinegar, red grape juice, and slices of fresh orange and lemon. The fruit vinegar has just the right balance of sweetness and tartness, concentrated to pack a real punch (no pun intended). The addition of brandy and honey makes this a proper winter warmer.

1 bottle of red wine

4 tbsp brandy

3 tbsp Fred & Bex Raspberry Vinegar

3 tbsp honey

1 carton red grape juice

1 orange

1 lemon

1 cinnamon stick

1 tsp cloves

To start, pour the red wine and brandy into a large saucepan over a medium heat, and add the raspberry vinegar and grape juice. Heat slowly, stirring occasionally, until wisps of steam start to rise from the surface. Next, cut the fruit into thick slices and add a couple of each to the pan (save the rest to serve) along with the cinnamon, cloves and honey. Bring the punch to the boil and then turn down the heat and allow to simmer for about twenty minutes.

Have a taste and make sure all the flavours are balanced – depending on your taste, you might like to add more honey to make it sweeter, although I prefer to keep the flavour just a little bit tart. If you want to lower the alcohol content, you can add more grape juice, although be aware that it can add a slight bitterness so you may need another spoonful of honey.

Serve in a mug with a slice of orange, or, if you’d like to dress it up a bit, try dipping the orange slices in sugar and serving on the rim of a full wineglass. Bottoms up!
